EminAlper, who seems to be the generational successor of Nuri Bilge Ceylan, is the author of this thriller with a Chinatown vibe in which Emre, a young urbanite prosecutor, is an “outsider” in a drought-stricken village in Turkey, where he arrives with the intention of changing the corrupt functioning of the local chieftains. After a night of drunkenness with fatal consequences, he embarks on an investigation, shaped by his attraction to the head of the local newspaper (in a country where homosexuality has been criminalised since the Erdoğan era).
